The annual Ports of Auckland Round the Bays running race is fast approaching but secured fundraising has already helped get 6 bowel cancer patients off the rehabilitation waiting list before the race has even begun.
Beth Nicol set up her EverydayHero fundraising page a few weeks ago and has already raised over $2000 for Bowel Cancer Foundation Trust.
“2018 was the year my sister got diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer. This is my way of doing what I can to help less families go through what we have this year,” she said.
"She was diagnosed with bowel Cancer last January, and after much persuasion she got the full scan in April which showed it had spread a lot, was stage 4 and they thought she had 12-18 months to live.
"There hasn’t been any treatment offered since then. They did say if she had chemo it may extend her life expectancy by 3 months at most, but she declined. She has changed her diet a lot, and partakes in “oxygen therapy” but she has declined any further scans or tests etc, so we are just living it day by day."
Bowel Cancer Foundation Trust CEO, Georgina Mason, regularly updates Beth on what her fundraising efforts have achieved in real time.
“Our digital charity is so nimble that it works well with fundraising platforms like EverydayHero and Givealittle.
"It’s so easy to set up a fundraising page and we get the funds that have been raised to date paid out in to our accounts every couple of weeks. That means we can instantly pay for treatment as soon as the money hits our bank even if the fundraiser has yet to finish.”
The Ports of Auckland Round the Bays run is on March 3rd. If you would like to help Beth reach her target on behalf of her sister and help get more bowel cancer patients off the waiting list and rehabilitate after cancer treatment and donate to her page please
“I aim to smash my target so please do help me to help them by donating what you can using the 'Give Now' button on my page. Let’s spread awareness and show our support!," said Beth.
"The NZ healthcare system was very good to me when I had to get my tests and hopefully I can give something back by doing this run."
